"Soft Covers for Hard Times" with Merikay Waldvogel

Welcome Spring!!!  It has been a long time since we have posted anything on our blog.  Sorry for the long absence.  I guess not much to post about over the last several months.  But now we do have some very exciting news to share and I will start at the beginning..................
About three or four years ago one of our members contacted Merikay Waldvogel to see if she would be interested in coming to NW PA and speak to our group.  At that time, she was not traveling for lectures and workshops.   Although, she said that if she was ever in our area she would look us up.  Fast forward to January 2013.........It was brought to our attention that she was giving a lecture in Charleston, WV at the Clay Center.  We think to ourselves, maybe she is traveling for lectures again.  We contact her and here is what we have arranged.........................

NORTHWEST PA QUILT STUDY GROUP
PRESENTS:
AN EVENING WITH MERIKAY WALDVOGEL
MAY 15, 2013, 6:30 PM
QUILT DISCOVERY DAY WITH MERIKAY
                             MAY 16, 2013, 8:30 AM until 12 noon
 Location for both events:
 Christian & Missionary Alliance Church
233 Church Street, Cambridge Springs, PA

LECTURE:  Merikay Waldvogel, nationally known quilt authority, curator, lecturer, 2009 Quilters Hall of Fame Honoree, and recognized expert on quilts of the twentieth century quilt revival, will be giving her lecture, “Soft Covers for Hard Times”, which is based on her key work on early 20th century quilts and quiltmakers.  If you are a quilter, enjoy history, and would like to have a better understanding of those antique quilts passed down from your mother, grandmother or great grandmother………then you will want to attend Merikay’s lecture.  Her lecture is sure to give you a better understanding of the nature and role quilts played during the Great Depression, as well as illustrating, how in a difficult time creative people were able to combine beauty and utility into one art form….Quilts!  Tickets $10.00
DISCOVERY DAY:  Curious about the story your family’s quilt tells?  Bring that old quilt from your closet and learn how color, craftsmanship, and technique can reveal its history.  Limited to one quilt per person.   Pre-registration required, with a limit of 30 to the class.  Thursday morning begins at 8:30 am, with quilt registrations….Fill out a short form and then enjoy refreshments until 9 am.  Merikay will bring to light things you may never have known about your quilt.  Cost just $10.00.

We are very excited to have Merikay in our area and to offer these events to the public.  We hope to continue having lectures such as these.  We have a list of speakers that we would love to host.  I believe that slowing, but surely, we will work our way down that list and continue to provide such events to our community.
